Beef cattle production on Piatã grass pastures in silvopastoral systems

چکیده
Tropical beef cattle production involving animals grazing in a shaded and biologically diverse environment, surrounded by high-quality edible biomass, is achievable through silvopastoral systems (SPSs). However, it necessary to assess the effects of presence trees on forage animal performance over time. In Brazilian Cerrado, we evaluated 2 densities eucalyptus SPSs (8 years age - SPS22: 227 trees/ha; SPS14: 357 trees/ha) morphology, nutritive value Urochloa brizantha cv. BRS Piatã grass plus Nellore heifers, compared with grass-only pasture, year from 2015 2016. On one hand, improved (P<0.001) as reflected higher crude protein digestibility lower neutral acid detergent fiber concentrations pasture. other pasture had herbage mass accumulation rate than SPSs. Forage growth decreased tree density. Increasing competition could be serious issue limiting should monitored. The suitability for planting may questionable after 8th establishment further studies are warranted.

Stephen T. Morris Institute Veterinary, Animal and Biomedical Sciences, Massey University, Private Bag 11222, Palmerston North 4410, New Zealand ABSTRACT: The New Zealand climate favours pasture growth, and it is the key to sheep and beef cattle production as pasture provides over 95% of the diet of sheep and beef cattle. Production systems range from intensive sheep and beef cattle farms on th...
متن کاملSocial behaviour of cattle in tropical silvopastoral and monoculture systems.
Silvopastoral systems can be a good alternative for sustainable livestock production because they can provide ecosystem services and improve animal welfare. Most farm animals live in groups and the social organization and interactions between individuals have an impact on their welfare. Therefore, the objective of this study was to describe and compare the social behaviour of cattle (Bos indicu...
متن کاملQuality of retail beef from two grass-based production systems in comparison with conventional beef.
Seventy beef strip loins (Longissimus dorsi) were sampled, originating from labels prescribing pasturing (PS, suckler beef; PF, finished steers or heifers), from conventional production (CH, heifers; CB, young bulls), and from a label producing intensively fattened young bulls (LB) and prescribing specific husbandry conditions but not grazing. Samples were purchased in autumn and spring (1:1) f...
